Daily Dhikr: Essential Terms to Deepen Your Faith and Connection

The modern world always keeps us busy. In this fast-moving world, we often forget to form a connection with our faith and religion. Eventually, most of us get busy with our lives and forget about Allah and his blessings. However, there is one way that can help us Muslims to remain connected with our creator and His divine presence.

Dhikr, which means remembrance of Allah, is one of the most powerful ways to maintain a constant connection with Him. Contrary to what people commonly believe, it is not a repetition of phrases. Rather, it is a practice that helps to strengthen our faith and purify our hearts.

Allah himself has mentioned this in the Quran.

Those who believe and find peace in their hearts from the contemplation of God: Surely there is peace of heart in the contemplation of God!\”

[Al-Quran 13:28]

In this article, we will discuss how any Muslim man or woman can incorporate Dhikr into their daily routine and how they can form a strong connection with Allah.

1. Subhan Allah (سبحان الله) – Glory be to Allah

As Muslims, you must have repeatedly heard the word Subhan Allah. It is one of the most commonly recited phrases in Islam. It is also one of the ways through which we Muslims acknowledge his presence and his perfections. By reciting Subhan Allah, we are accepting the fact that he is free from any sort of imperfection.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet () said, \”(There are) two words which are dear to the Beneficent (Allah) and very light (easy) for the tongue (to say), but very heavy in weight in the balance. They are: \’\’Subhan Allah wa-bi hamdihi\’\’ and \’\’Subhan Allah Al-`Azim.\”

[Sahih al-Bukhari 7563]

Every time a person of faith recites SubhanAllah, it serves as a reminder that we are His humble servants and only Allah is perfect. It is also through SubhanAllah that we are begging for his mercy.

2. Alhamdulillah (الحمد لله) – All Praise is for Allah

Alhamdulillah is one of the ways that Muslims thank Allah. Being thankful is one of the central teachings of Islam. Therefore, we must thank Allah for all the blessings that he has bestowed upon us whether it be material or spiritual.

Allah tells us in the Qur\’an:

وَاِذْ تَاَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَىِٕنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَاَزِيْدَنَّكُمْ وَلَىِٕنْ كَفَرْتُمْ اِنَّ عَذَابِيْ لَشَدِيْدٌ۝۷

Remember, your Lord proclaimed: \”I shall give you more if you are grateful, but if you are thankless then surely My punishment is very great.\”

[Al-Quran 14:7]

This verse means that Allhamdullilah helps to develop the feeling of satisfaction in life. It is also a reminder that no matter the situation, Allah’s wisdom is far beyond our comprehension. We must simply express our gratitude and uplift the souls. Being thankful also brings numerous blessings into our lives.

3. Allahu Akbar (الله أكبر) – Allah is the Greatest

We often recite Allahu Akbar during our prayers which serves us as moments of reflection and reminds us about Allah’s greatness and his power. It is also a reminder of the fact that there is no existence that is greeted by Allah.

Prophet Muhammad, in one instance, said:

\”Shall I tell you a thing which is better than what you asked me for? When you go to your beds, say: \’Allahu Akbar (i.e. Allah is Greater)\’ for 34 times, and \’Al hamdu Li Allah (i.e. all the praises are for Allah)\’ for 33 times, and Subhan Allah (i.e. Glorified be Allah) for 33 times. This is better for you than what you have requested.\”

[Sahih al-Bukhari 3113]

By reciting this Adhkar during the entire day, anyone can develop feelings of humility and a sense of security. It is a guarantee that we are under the care of someone who is the most powerful on Earth and beyond.

4. La ilaha illallah (لا إله إلا الله) – There is no god but Allah

The foundation of Islam starts from reciting La Ilaha Illallah which signifies the oneness of Allah. It is the most basic declaration of faith by any Muslim. Moreover, it is also an important key to enter Jannah.

The Quran mentions it on various occasions. One of which is as follows.

Know then, therefore, there is no god but He, and ask forgiveness for your sins and those of believing men and women. God knows your wanderings and your destination.

[Al Quran 47:19]

By repeating the first part of the Shahada, we reaffirm that we completely surrender ourselves to Allah and we have complete faith in him.

5. Astaghfirullah (أستغفر الله) – I seek forgiveness from Allah

Human beings always make mistakes. However, In Islam, we know that Allah is always ready to forgive his followers and those who truly seek forgiveness. The simple phrase Astaghfirullah is a request for mercy and forgiveness. It is a way of telling Allah that we know about our shortcomings and are requesting Allah’s forgiveness.

In the Qur’an, Allah says:

And that you should seek His forgiveness and turn towards Him. He will bestow the best things of life on you for a time ordained, and favour those with blessings who are worthy of grace.

[Al Quran 11:3]

Our Prophet Muhammad always used to ask for forgiveness from Allah numerous times in a day. It serves as an example that if the great Prophets can ask for His mercy then why can’t we do the same?

The constant recitation of Astaghfar also helps to keep our hearts safe from arrogance. It is a way to tell Allah that we will return to Him every time we fall and we know that his mercy knows no bounds.

6. La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله) – There is no power or strength except through Allah

Whenever you feel overwhelmed by life, you must recite La Hawla wa la Quwwata illa billah to gain a sense of relief. It is the phrase that all the power and strength belongs to Allah and only He holds this much power. If we come across any challenge, it is only through His strength that we can overcome that challenge.

Another reason for reciting this phrase during moments of difficulty is that it helps to shift our focus toward Allah’s infinite capability. It is a gentle reminder that nothing can happen if Allah does not will.

7. Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللهِ) – In the Name of Allah

Starting all our work with Bismillah is something that has been taught to us ever since we were young. It is a practice that the Prophet Muhammad used to follow. Whether it is the start of a new day, a meal, or an important work, saying Bismillah ensures Allah\’s name in whatever we do.

In the Qur\’an, Allah instructs:

READ IN THE name of your Lord who created

[Al Quran 96:1]

Starting any work with Bismillah reminds us of Allah\’s presence in every action. It is a type of declaration that we completely trust Him for guidance in all our affairs.

Conclusion

Incorporating these simple terms into our daily routines has a huge impact on our lives. It helps to strengthen our faith and well-being. The best thing about these adhkar is that they can easily be recited on any given day or time. Muslims do not have to memorize them, as they are usually practiced daily by the elders in our family.

As Allah says in the Qur\’an:

So, therefore, remember Me, and I shall remember you; and give thanks and do not be ungrateful.

[Al Quran 2:152]
