Surah Al-Baqara is the first Surah revealed in Medina, after Al-Hijrah, and it is the longest Surah in the Quran, and the second Surah in the arrangement of Surahs in the Quran.
The longest verse in the Quran which is the verse of debit and is called “Ayat Al-Mudaynah”, is located in Surat Al- Baqara.
And the greatest verse in the Quran, is the throne verse which is called “Ayat Al-korsy”, and it is located in Surat Al-Baqara too.
The reason of the name “Al-Baqara”:
The word of “Al-Baqara” is an Arabic word that means ” The cow”, and this name was given to this Surah because in this Surah there is a story talking about a miracle was happened during the time of the Messenger of Allah Moses –peace be upon him- when a Jewish man was killed and the suspicions took place around some men, and the whole matter was raised to the Messenger of Allah; Moses, and he raised the matter to his Lord, and Allah revealed to him to slaughter a cow, and to take something from it and hit the slain with it, then the killed man will wake up and tell about who killed him.
Allah Almighty said: {And when Moses said to his people: ” Allah commands you to slaughter a cow”, they said: “Do you take us in derision?” he said: “I seek refuge in Allah from being among the senseless“}, Surat Al-Baqara, 67.
And the Almighty said: {We said: “Strike him with a piece of it (the cow)”, thus does Allah revive the dead, and He shows you His signs so that you may apply reason}, Surat Al-Baqara, 73.

Virtues of Surat Al-Baqara in repelling demons and calling for angles:
One of the numerous virtues of Surat Al-Baqara is that it repels demons from homes; as demons when hear it, they run away as it affects them strongly, as Prophet Muhammad -peace and blessings be upon him- said: (Don’t make your houses like tombs , the devil runs away from a house that Surat Al-Paqara is been read in it), narrated by Abu Huraira.
On the other hand, Surat Al-Baqara causes angles to come down to listen to it, like what was reported by Usayd Ibn Hudayr who is a companion of Prophet Muhammad –peace and blessings be upon him-That, while he was reciting Surat Al-Baqara at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled and when he stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again!
And The Prophet –peace and blessings be upon him- said to him: “Do you know what that was?”
Ibn Hudyr replied: No.
The prophet (p.b.u.h) said: ‘Those were angles who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared”.
Virtue of Al-Zahrawan in the responding to the supplication:
The Messenger of Allah Almighty (p.b.u.h) said: (Allah never disappoints one who gets up at the dead of the night and reads Surat Al-Baqara and Al-Imran), narrated by Abdullah Ibn Masoud. And this means that Surat Al-Baqara is a reason for Allah to respond to our supplications and prayers, as its reading opens the closed doors, as when a Muslim who is in distress and sadness reads Surat Al-Baqara, and then he prays to Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will facilitate every thing for him, relief his distress, and remove his sadness.
Virtue of Surat Al-Baqara in incantation:
As reading of Surat Al-Baqara is very useful in inhibiting magic –with God’s permission- as Prophet (p.b.u.h) said: ( Recite Surat Al-Baqara, for to take recourse to it is a blessing, and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the Batala (magicians) cannot confront it), narrated by Abu Umama Al-Bahili.
Virtue of Al-Zahrawan on the Day of Resurrection:
Another virtue of the countless virtues of Surat Al-Baqara that it will come with its readers on the Day of Resurrection arguing on behalf of them, as Prophet Muhammad -peace and blessings be upon him- said: (The Qur’an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection preceded with Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-‘Imran arguing on behalf of those who are associated with them), reported by An-Nawwas bin Sam’an -May Allah be pleased with him.
Virtue of Surat Al-Baqara in legislations:
Surat Al-Baqara contains many legislation provision, and Muslims based on it in their modern constitutions, as the Prophet -peace and blessings be upon him- he said: (Every thing has a hump, and the hump of the Quran is Surat Al-Baqara), narrated by Abu Hurriara.
where the hump is the hump of the camel and it means a” high”, and Surat Al-Baqara called the “hump of the Quran” either because of its length or because it contains many rulings, and may be because it contains an order to Jihad which has a great honor in Islam.
