Woman in Islam is  so important due to her multiple roles, as she is a mother, a wife, a daughter, and a partner of a man in the Muslim community too.

Woman before Islam:

Throughout the human history before Islam, women were offend and treated as if they were not human beings, and they suffered a lot starting from their birthday, as when any one knew that he was conceived a baby girl, his face darkened of sadness! As Allah Almighty said: {When one of them is brought the news of a female (newborn), his face became darkened and he choked with suppressed agony, he was hiding from the people out of distress at the news he has been brought, shall he retain it in humiliation, or bury it in the ground, Evil was the judgment that they made}, Surat Al-Nahl,58-59.

And they were choosing to bury their daughters in a tradition called “female infanticide”!!!

And a girl after growing up and being a woman, was treated with humiliation too, and was considered to be a property of a man like money, things, and livestock. And he disposed of her as he pleased, without being judged!  a woman’s role in the community was to satisfy the man’s cravings and to be a womb to produce children, and she was  deprived of her inheritance, and did  not have the right to accept or refuse marriage as well.

Woman in Islam:

After this long history of injustice, Allah Almighty revealed his Mercy on earth by revealing the religion of mercy and justice,

Islam, which came to change the ugly face of life to a life of honor and dignity, and brought drastic changes  to the woman in particular.

Woman in Islam was empowered , and Islamic teachings laid down the principles of equality, freedom, independence, and rights for women. But also Islam treats woman as an independent human, which means that a woman in Islam has right and she also has duties.

Woman in Islam( in the Holy Quran):

The Holy Quran is filled with many verses that emphasized the rights of woman in Islam, and urged for taking care of her. There is a great Surah in Quran named Al-Nisa’ (The Women), and it is one of the longest Surashs in the Holy Quran which is talking about mercy and justice  for vulnerable persons, especially the women. And a Surah named Al-Talaq(The divorce) And Allah Almighty revealed in these Surahs that a woman has rights in inheritance, independency, in being treated with kindness and mercy, in accepting and refusing marriage, and in getting divorced.

As Allah Almighty said: {O,  you who have faith! It is not lawful for you to inherit women forcibly, and do not press them to take away part of what you have given them, unless they commit a gross indecency, and live with them with kindness, and if  you dislike them, so, maybe you dislike something while Allah invests it with an abundant good}, Surat Al-Nisa’, 19.

And even in the divorce Allah Almighty ordered the man to be kind with her as He said: {House them where you live, in accordance with your means, and do not harass them to put them in straits, and if they be pregnant, maintain them until they deliver, then, if they suckle [the baby] for you, give them their wages},Surat Al-Talaq,6.

Woman in Islam (in Hadith and Sunnah) :

Prophet of Islam Muhammad –peace and blessings be upon him- called for taking care of woman in Islam, as he said: (Whoever believes in Allah and the Day of resurrection, should not harm  his neighbor, and should take care of the women, for they are created from a rib and the most crooked portion of the rib is its upper part; if you try to straighten it, it will be  broken, and if you leave it, it will remain crooked, so take care of the women), Narrated by Abu-Huraira.

And he (p.b.u.h) also said: (O, Allah, I declare inviolable the rights of two weak ones: orphans and women), reported by Abu Shuraih Khuwailid bin ‘Amr Al-Khuza’i  -May Allah be pleased with him.

Even in transferring the Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h), a woman has a great role, represented in Mrs. Aisha bint Abi Bakr –may God be pleased with her.
As she spent about 50 years narrating Hadiths and teaching  the Islam rules, as she had a great position in the Hadith science. And after the Prophet (p.b.u.h) died, she took up the task of the Fatwa until she died.

Woman role in the Islamic history:

A Woman in Islam has played a vital role, she participated in all the phases of the Islamic Dawa, lets talk about two women who were excellent examples of the role of a woman in Islam.

From the first day of  the Prophetic mission, the first one who believed in Muhammad as a Messenger of Allah, was Mrs. Khadijah bent Khuwailid –may God be pleased with her- the first wife of the Messenger of Allah,  and she believed in him and supported him through his great mission, and she made his burdens easier to bear.

And During Hijrah, there was a person helping the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h), and his companion; Abu Bakr, in their journey, and was bringing food and drink to them in the cave of “Thowr” for  the three days they spent in there, this person was climbing the Mountain daily while holding food and drink for them, this person was Asmaa’ bent Abu Bakr, and she was pregnant at that time!

Not  only that , she also participated in the battle of Al-Yarmouk , with her husband and her son, and she fought with her sword,  and she said to her son” Live with dignity, and  die honorable , and do not  be taken as a captive” what a strength the Islam gave to a woman!!!!
